Describe A Challenge You Faced That You Thought Was Rather Difficult – Sample Image

Okay, last week, my brother asked me to do him a favor of his school project. His school assigned the kids to create a handmade craft with natural materials. Actually, I thought it could be a piece of cake, but it turned out to be really challenging.

My little brother intended to make a dinosaur out of leaves, because he is a dinosaur fan. I initially thought it would be one-hour job, so I thought that I just simply wandered through the park, picked up a few leaves, and swiftly assemble a lifelike dinosaur. However, I soon realized that this task was far from easy.

Finding the right leaves was the first hurdle. Not all leaves were suitable; some were too brittle, others too large or small. I spent hours searching, sifting through piles of leaves, trying to match their shapes and size to the parts of a dinosaur. Even after collecting what I thought was a sufficient amount, I faced another challenge during the assembly process.

Creating the dinosaur’s mouth and legs was particularly tricky. The leaves had to be positioned just right to give the impression of a fierce creature, but they kept falling apart. I had to resort to using glue, which added another layer of complexity, as I had to ensure the glue dried without the eaves shifting.

At the time, I felt incredibly frustrated and overwhelmed. My confidence, which was initially high, dwindled as hours passed and the dinosaur still looked more like a chaotic pile of leaves than a majestic prehistoric creature. It was a humbling experience that reminded me that even seemingly simple tasks can become complex when executed with precision and creativity. So, I have to say that I don’t want to do it ever again.

Well, most children will initially have signs of frustration or anxiety. Because that’s the nature of children. They tend to chicken out when confronting challenges. However, as they mature, they learn to adopt a more proactive approach. They might seek help from parents, teachers, or peers, who can offer guidance and support.
Also, some children might engage in problem-solving strategies such as breaking down the challenges into smaller tasks and solving them one by one. Some of them might use some creative thinking to find solutions.

2. Is it easy for children to overcome a challenge?

Generally speaking, it’s never easy for children due to their limited cognitive and emotional development. Especially for younger children, they might find it more difficult.
However, as they grow older and gain more life experience, they develop better coping mechanisms, and things become easier for them.
Because factors such as a supportive environment, encouragement from caregivers, and previous experiences of overcoming challenges can also positively influence a child’s ability to tackle difficulties. But still, most children will find it difficult when facing a challenge.

3. Do most people choose to face a challenge alone or with others?

Oh, that depends. I mean, this question varies greatly among individuals. Some people prefer to face challenges alone, because they value independence and a stronger sense of accomplishment if they can overcome obstacles solo.
They might believe that relying on themselves helps them build resilience and self-confidence.
But many others choose to face challenges with others, either in teams or with support from friends and family. Collaboration can provide emotional support, diverse perspectives, which can help make the challenge feel less daunting.

4. What activities do you think would make children feel challenged? Why?

4. What activities do you think would make children feel challenged? Why?

Well, any kind of activities that they haven’t done before and require problem-solving, critical thinking, and physical effort can make children feel challenged.
For example, puzzle games, coding, sports with complex rules, and artistic endeavors like painting or music, especially something that they haven’t even tried. These activities are challenging for them, because they can’t rely on their past experiences and often, they need to think outside the box, develop new skills, and improve their physical fitness.
So children often say no to these. But at the same time, these activities can better boost their self-esteem and sense of achievement if they can complete them well.

Physically, they might struggle with endurance, strength, and coordination. Technically, they need to master new skills and rules, which can be overwhelming.
Psychologically speaking, fear of failure, lack of confidence, and the pressure to perform well can be significant barriers.
Yeah, I suppose those are some challenges that are inevitable for beginners.
