Sample Answer 1
I’m going to talk about the time I decided to move to Shanghai to study, which is one of the biggest decisions that I’ve ever made.
At that time, I was still in grade 12, and I was in two minds about whether I was going to enter university in a big city or stay in my hometown and study there. It might sound like a trivial matter for many people, but for me it was a serious one because I had never been away from my family before that time. I knew that studying in the city would ensure a greater future for me, but if I did that, I wouldn’t be able to see my parents as much as I wanted.
Plus, living away from them meant that I had to get out of my comfort zone and learn to do everything on my own, and I was kind of nervous about that. So later, I asked my parents for their opinions and they encouraged me to move to Shanghai for higher education. Even though they knew that they could no longer see me every day and they would miss me a lot, they told me that it would be an important milestone in my life and it would help me to devote myself to the fullest.
Eventually I took their advice and choose to study at university here. Now, looking back, I think I’ve made the right decision. I’ve changed a lot since the first time I set foot in here. I’ve become more independent and a lot more mature compared to Hawaii was a few years ago.
Apparently it was really tough in the first few months here. I didn’t have many friends and I often felt terribly homesick, but overtime I got used to the city life and now I can proudly say that I have no trouble living away from home. I still keep in touch with my parents really often via mobile phone and I always try to visit them every two months.
Part 3
1. Who do young people like to ask for advice when making decisions?
Well, I think first they take to the Internet for help because young people, most of them, especially Gen. Z and some of the millennials and were born in the Internet era, right?
And so you see, if they grew up scrolling on the phone or the iPads and then definitely on, they trust the Internet more than their older counterparts. And so they might, I don’t know, as strangers on social media for help and those self claimed experts right on.
For example, if you want to attend a very good university somewhere, but you’re not really sure what subjects you should choose, what courses to sign up for.
And then definitely you can well ask for help from those who claim to have graduated from that school right on the Internet. And and so that is the very critical source of information.
And because well, obviously is very convenient, right and all you need to do is just to post your questions online and then you immediately you get the answer.
But of course, and some of young people on the look around and see if there are people that happen to have the information they need.
Again, it might be the classmates and who have gone to that school before or who are exactly studying that school.
So I think these are the just the two ways for many young people to find the answer to, to seek help on when they need to make a very important decision.
2. Do advertisements influence consumers’ decisions?
Well, definitely, but in a very subtle way, not very directly.
By that I mean, well, it’s not to say that in the advertisements tell you to buy this and then immediately you make the choice rates of buying that thing. It’s not that straightforward.
I think the subliminal influence that the advertisements have on our mind is that, you know, they are well step by step, make something very salient in our memory, in our in our subconsciousness, OK, to the point that when we want to buy something, the name of the brand immediately surfaces
For example, if I want to buy, I don’t know. If I want to buy some soft drinks, then Coca-Cola sort of comes to mind because the advertising is just everywhere, right? Inescapable. And so this is just how advertising influences our choices. But it’s not 100%, all right?
It’s not to say that I remember this friend, but you know, I I’m going to buy that immediately.
Perhaps I don’t find the ones available in the grocery store or perhaps people around me sort of talk me out of that choice, right? And then I say, oh, Coca-Cola, you know, it’s not that healthy. It’s full of sugar or something like that.
So, yeah, I think this is just how the the advertising works, you know, to kind of influence our choice.
3. What kinds of decisions do young people have to make?
There are so many decisions that young people have to make.
Firstly, I’d like to talk about the period of their school time. So when it comes to the school time, children have to decide what kind of school they would like to attend and what kind of major they would like to study. So those are very important in their personal development.
And secondly, I’d like to talk about some choices in their daily life. For example, the dress code, maybe some young people, they have to decide what kind of clothes they would like to wear and what kind of styles they would they prefer. And what’s more, maybe they will choose different peoples, being their friend, so they will make a variety of choices in their daily life.
4. Do you think young people are easily influenced by others when they make decisions? Why or why not?
Well, for this question, I think it should depends on different individuals.
I think for those people who have a strong opinion like me are less likely to be influenced by our people because we are we are a kind of determined people. If we if we made a decision, we will how to say prone to do that and manage to do that.
And On the contrary, I think for other people who are independent on their on others opinion from especially from their senior relatives or family members or from their friends, they will be more likely to be influenced. They will hesitate to, they will hesitate to make a decision and to do that and they will be more likely to change their decisions from time to time.
So that’s my opinion. Thank you.
5. Do you think some people can make decisions without asking for advice from others?
Well, I would say some can but some can’t.
You know, some people, they are so confident about the decision they made and they have maybe done a lot of research on those things and they just made a completely flame for the decision they made. So they might think that it is not necessary to ask others for help and others might think that they are too proud to ask others.
They may feel embarrassed when they turn others for help. So they will choose not to ask the advice from others. Even if they don’t know the answer. They will not.
They will just keep on doing the thing that they don’t know. They keep on this uncertainty.
6. Do you think it’s necessary for kids to make as many decisions by themselves as they can?
Yes, I think so. I think it is very significant for children to make some decisions by themselves in their daily life because I think it’s the kind of training in which they can, they will know they have the right to make any choices in their daily life.
And also parents need to let them know if they made a choice, they need to be responsible for their own choices. So I think it’s a kind of a training and it will be beneficial for their personal development. So that is the first point.
And secondly, some young, some small kids, kids, they have a strong opinion nowadays and I think they have the ability to make some choices by themselves.
For example, the daily dress and you know, everyone has the dress code.
I think the children have no exceptions about this.
So they need to decide what kind of clothes or what kind of styles they would like to wear.
So I think yes.
