I want to talk about my little brother, who is really creative and has a passion for crafting with his own hands. He’s just eight years old, but his imagination and skill with making things are truly remarkable.

He likes making clay or sometimes mud into different shapes, like little mini trains, planes, little cars, etc.. He can sometimes spend hours in his room kneading the soft mud and turning it into tiny masterpieces in his imagination. He is not only interested in mud and clay, but origami, or we usually call it paper-folding. He is like a magician, cos he can fold them into intricate animals and flowers with just a few sheets of paper. I didn’t even know where he learned it. (Probably Douyin, you know, Chinese version of TikTok).

What really surprised me was how he gave me a birthday gift made by himself. It was truly an entire set of mini furniture – chairs, tables, even a little bookshelf. It was really amazing, cos he just used some colorful and tiny pebbles and bits of wood he found in the park or woods we usually go to. Honestly speaking, it was not as delicate as those artistic decorations that we can possibly find in shops, but he really magically turned those wastes into well-polished work of art. And he even painted those furniture with different colors and hues. He is amazing, isn’t he?

I don’t know why he likes making things by hand. I think it can somehow bring him immense satisfaction and accomplishment. Oh, something that I have to tell you is that he is a bit introverted, so I think creating something can be a way to express himself and communicate with this world.

As for me, I feel incredibly proud of my brother’s talents and the dedication he puts into his crafting. I cherish the pieces that he has made for me and I keep them as precious keepsakes. But I do hope that he can be more outgoing, and so he can tell us more about how he can use his magic and more about himself.

5. Is it reasonable to charge a high price for handmade things?

That really varies, I would say.
Because the price of handmade things are made depending on factors such as the complexity of the design, the rarity of the materials used, and the skill and experience of the artisan.
While some handmade items may seem expensive compared to mass-produced goods, I believe it’s reasonable to charge a higher price for them. This is because each piece is unique, reflecting the time, effort, and passion put into its creation.
